Putting Things Down
Usually I write at work, but down time has been limited, so I've been writing less. Today I'm writing a short thing about how valuable stepping away can be.
I'm working slowly through a new release I'm calling Lucky and Blessed. The first two tracks came together really well, really quickly, and felt good. The third track, I banged my head against for like three nights in a row. I'd complete rip the edit up and start over and still I couldn't find anything.
Then my kids got sick and we had family vacation and I had band practice and I went to my friend Matt's house to work on the Eurorack case we're building (I'll post more on the case soon). I had to cook dinner several times in there. I had a few very bad nights of sleep and I got sick myself.
And finally last night I came back to it and the whole thing clicked into place in two hours from a blank slate.
I'm writing this post as a reminder that sometimes when I'm banging my head it's not because I'm bad at doing this kind of thing or because I'll never make a track I'm proud of again. Maybe I'll make a sign I can tap.
